Ravi Shankar, the legendary musician who helped bring India's music to the West and influenced generations of performers, has died.

He was 92.

The sitar player and composer, whose daughter is Norah Jones, had undergone heart-valve replacement surgery last week after recent respiratory and cardiovascular ailments.

Shankar's close relationship with George Harrison of The Beatles was a key catalyst in introducing Eastern musical traditions to American and European audiences.

Harrison called Shankar the 'godfather of world music.'

A multiple Grammy winner, Shankar was nominated again last week.

He performed at iconic 1960s events like Woodstock and the Monterey International Pop Festival.

Shankar collaborated with jazz giants like John Coltrane, classical greats like Philip Glass, and helped organize the all-star Concert for Bangladesh, an early example of the rock benefit shows that would take hold in following decades.
