Vanessa Bryant Wouldn't Be Married to Kobe If He Never Won a Championship?

(Huffington Post)

Vanessa Bryant 'Wouldn't Marry Someone Who 'Can't Win Championships,'' claims the Huffington Post, which, like many other outlets, picked up a New York magazine interview, and somewhat sensationalized her comments.

According to the site, Vanessa ' who is wed to Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant ' 'enjoys the life of a basketball wife. And she wants everyone to know the if [sic] you can't win championships, you can't put a ring on it.'

The site goes on to report that in the New York interview, Vanessa 'revealed that any man she calls 'husband' must be a champion.'

'I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can't win championships,' Vanessa is quoted as saying.

The quote continues, 'If you're sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.'

But a source close to her tells Gossip Cop that the wildly-disseminated comment is largely being 'taken out of context' and misrepresented.

Vanessa was NOT saying she would only accept being married to a winner, but rather discussing the desire to 'have their sacrifice as a family pay off.'

As many know, but sometimes forget, a career in the NBA is not only time-intensive and stressful for the players, but also their families, who have to cope with their loved ones often being on the road and unavailable.

Also, it's worth noting that when Kobe and Vanessa met, he wasn't anywhere near the icon he is today.

In fact, she agreed to marry him well before he ever won a single championship.

Hopefully, more outlets will champion fact-checking.

  • Did Vanessa's publicist write this story for damage control? Do recall that Kobe was recruited to the NBA straight out of high school and was being touted at the time as the next Michael Jordan and immediately was a star. He certainly wasn't a nobody that she agreed to marry and was well on his way to 'icon' status. Vanessa did not even graduate high school but left after her junior year (she was his high school sweetheart) because she landed Kobe. He may not have technically won a championship yet, but it was obvious he was going to. What Gossip Cop said at the end of this story would be equivalent to saying that LeBron James wasn't an icon prior to this past year because he hadn't won a championship yet. It was obvious it was just a matter of time. And Kobe was going to the Lakers with their history of winning championships when Vanessa married him. Is it perhaps GossipCop that needs to 'champion fact-checking' on this one? Recall also how quickly she forgave her husband's indiscretions when he bought her expensive jewelry. And frankly, these are quotes and the Huffington Post isn't known for misquoting people. As Internet publications go, it is one of the more reputable ones. It is possible that they didn't include the full breadth of her comments talking about the sacrifices NBA player families make, but the bottom line is she still said what she said with the most offensive part being that she completely ignores that Kobe and other NBA players are part of a team and organization. Each individual player does his part to contribute to a team to win, and no player can win it on his own. Even if you expand what she was saying to the full breadth her publicist claims, she has no acknowledgement of the fact her husband is part of a team and organization. No matter how you slice it, the woman has established quite a track record of both shallow comments and shallow behavior.
